Green agate is formed from microscopic quartz crystals and is a semi-precious stone. It is found as a tonsil agate in eruptive rocks and is named after the Achates River, now known as the Dirillo River, in southern Sicily, Italy. Green agate is commonly found in Mexico and Botswana and has a variety of names depending on its physical characteristics. The hardness of green agate is a 7.0 on the Mohs scale and has what is known as a “waxy” luster.
